(A Tried-and-True Packing List So You Feel Confident, Not Overwhelmed)
If you’re new to car camping and feeling like:
“Am I forgetting something?”
“What if I’m uncomfortable?”
“Why does everyone else make this look so easy?”
Come sit by the fire with me for a minute. 🔥
I’ve done the research, made the mistakes, camped in the rain, the cold, the heat, and the why-did-we-pack-this moment, so you don’t have to.
This is our exact beginner car camping setup. Nothing fancy for the sake of it. Everything here works. Everything earns its spot. And most importantly? It makes camping feel fun, cozy, and doable, even your very first time.
Let’s get you packed with confidence.
🏕️ Sleeping Quarters (Comfort = Enjoyment, Always)

Sleeping Bags
Your sleeping bag matters more than you think. Always consider when you’re camping.
- For spring & fall: choose something insulated
- For summer: lighter bag + extra sheet
We love the Sportneer Sleeping Bag, which is ideal for 0–15°C weather. In warmer months, we layer with a sheet and always bring a wool blanket — the Arcturus Military Wool Blanket is a must-have for chilly nights and fireside hangs.
Sleeping Pad, Mattress, or Cot
Getting off the ground = better sleep, warmer nights, happier campers.
- Couples: a self-inflating queen mattress like the Zearna
- Solo camping: XXL camping cot + pad
- Kids: single mattresses or extra-thick self-inflating pads
This setup has survived many nights and still feels luxurious after long days outside.
Inflatable Pillows
Small, packable, and surprisingly comfortable — the Hikenture Camping Pillow is our go-to.
Air Pump
Some mattresses have built-in pumps, but always bring a backup.
- Powered site? Use an electric air pump with multiple nozzles
- No power? A double-action hand pump works great

Tent (4–6 Person Minimum)
A good rule of thumb: a 6-person tent comfortably sleeps 4 with gear. We love a 6-person tent with large windows for airflow. Camping with family or friends? A 10-person tent with a room divider is a game changer.
Heavy-Duty Tarp (Do Not Skip This)
This is one of those learned the hard way items. We always bring a large, heavy-duty tarp — bigger than the tent — so we can:
- Tie it to trees
- Create rain cover
- Add shade
- Keep our site dry and usable
A 30’ x 30’ heavy-duty tarp is a solid place to start.
Tent Pegs + Rubber Mallet
Ground conditions change — always have backups.
A rubber mallet makes setup fast and frustration-free.
Paracord (200 ft Minimum)
Trust me: more is more. We use paracord to:
- Hang tarps
- Create clotheslines
- Secure gear
- Fix random things
Extension Cord
If you’re in a provincial park with power, bring a 100-foot extension cord. The outlet is never where you think it’ll be.
Tent Entry Setup
- Outdoor mat for shoes
- Mini broom & dustpan
These two small items keep your tent clean and your sanity intact.
Lighting
- Rechargeable camping lantern (5000mAh) for around the campsite, on the picnic table, better yet hang it in the tent with a caribeener
- Tactical flashlight for quick walks
- Rechargeable headlamp (1200 lumens) — hands-free is non-negotiable espcially for the kids
🔋 Power, Safety & Campfire Essentials
These are the items you’ll be so glad you packed.
- Solar power bank charger (absolute lifesaver on non-powered sites), they ay not fully power up but they keep the charge going
- Fully stocked first aid kit – boy mom here, there one that lives permanently in my truck and one in the camping tote
- Fiskars X11 Splitting Axe Hatchet (17”) for firewood & kindling
- Refillable butane BBQ lighter + Ronson Butane Fuel
- Dextreme Natural Fire Starter Cubes (2 cubes = roaring fire)
- Matches stored in a mason jar with the fire starters (old-school but flawless)
Camp Comfort, Games & Slow Living

Camp Chairs
Yes, picnic tables exist. No, they’re not super cozy buy the fire. We love the Overmont dual camp chair set with cooler pocket — perfect for fires, beach days, and long evenings under the stars.
Games & Fun
We keep a dedicated games tote ready to grab:
- Cards, monopoly deal card game(way better than the board game), Yahtzee, Scrabble, travel games
- Portable cornhole, ladder ball, washer toss,
- baseball gloves and baseball, football, frisbee
- Beach games- Bocce ball
- Shovels, pails, floaties
Rainy day? No problem.
Books & Audio
Hard copy books, Kindle Unlimited, or Audible — this is peak nervous-system reset time.
Kitchen / Sun Shelter
When bugs show up or rain rolls in, you’ll be thankful you packed this.
We love the Coleman kitchen/sun shelter — spacious, easy to set up, and instantly makes your site feel like home.
